Curious about what it's like to start a podcast? I was too, which is why I sat down with Katherine Sousa to discuss her own podcasting experience. Katherine ("Kat") hosts TMG Unfiltered with Devin ("Dev") Andrade, a podcast perfect for not just those who follow their vegan food blog Two Market Girls, but also those who want to get to know the lives of Kat and Dev beyond the blog.

1. What is it about podcasts that appeals to you and what made you decide to start one?

I love the discussion. The ability to sit down with people and just talk. I have always loved communication and learning about people and their stories, a podcast is just another way to do that. You can seriously talk about anything and somebody will listen. Plus the flexibility of podcasts is always amazing. I love that I can cook or workout or commute to school and that time is never wasted because you can be listening to podcasts and learning so much stuff!

2. What were/are some of the challenges that might have arose with taking on this new project? Some pros?

I think one of the biggest challenges is learning how to speak openly. To me podcasts are all about transparency and truth, so if you are afraid to speak your opinion out of fear of someone disagreeing with you then your podcast will be difficult to conduct. However we are quickly getting over that. Honestly pretty much everything about making a podcast is a positive. It is so much fun to make a podcast, a lot more fun than we were expecting. Any challenges that we face are well worth the work the overcome them.

3. What software do you use to record and edit your podcast?

We use Adobe Audition to record and edit our podcast. We also use the Marantz Professional Pod Pack 1 mic which has been wonderful!

4. What's the step-by-step process of planning and putting out each episode?

Typically we start with a topic that interests us. Many actually stem from each other. For example most of our topic ideas come when we are recording another topic. After we have an idea we look to see if a guest would compliment and enhance the discussion. This simply means, if we are talking about a topic that we think can be expanded on and use the expertise of someone else we reach out to someone to record with us. This is especially true for topics that we don't have enough information on ourselves and need an "expert" opinion. Then we look to planning what we are going to talk about in the podcast, this usually comes out in the form of questions. As you typically underestimate how long you can talk for we outline about five or six discussion questions that will help with the recording process. Five or six discussion questions usually results in a 30-40 min podcast. Then of course there is the editing process and finally posting and sharing on all our social channels.

5. What advice do you have for those interested in starting their own podcasts?

Honestly, just do it. Find a topic that you have a strong interest for and make the investment. Podcast mics can be cheaper than buying a new pair of shoes or jeans. We bought our mic for about $100 and we love it. Find a platform that you like to use, we post ours on Anchor and would highly recommend it. Anchor has been developing amazing tools for podcasters and recently release their one stop shop for editing your podcast, posting and even recording it. Making a podcast has never been easier. All that being said, make sure you pick a topic you love. When you love the topic you are talking about you never run out of things to talk about.

6. What podcasts are you currently listening to? Any that you recommend?

There are so many amazing podcasts out there. It is hard to pick just a few these are a few of my favourites lately:

  1. The Daily - which helps me stay up to date on what is going on in the world. This is an amazing podcast if you don't have time to watch the news.

  2. Pod Save America - an amazing podcast created by four former aids to President Obama. This is such a fun podcast because it welcomes journalists, politicians, comedians and activities to come together in an open discussion about politics, the press and the challenges posed by the Trump Presidency.

  3. The Science of Social Media - a podcast from Buffer that talks everything social media. If you want to know the latest in the digital world, this podcast will be your saviour.

  4. The Goal Digger Podcast - a podcast from social media influencer and photographer Jenna Kutcher. This is a podcast made for girl bosses and is full of business and life advice.

  5. Criminal - a podcast all about crime. I have always love true crime and mystery so I have such a draw to this podcast. I love this podcast because it is all about the stories of people.
